Talk:nitty
1908 Sidgwick citation
[edit]This can be found in much older texts, e.g. as "The Trickes of the Fayry called Pach", in 1840, Percy Society, Early English poetry, ballads, and popular literature of the Middle Ages. (Spelling in the passage might be slightly different.) Equinox ◑ 19:31, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
- @Equinox There is a 1908 quote you can add from the USA. For the meaning nitid I fear we can label that one hapax legomenon or something like that. Palaestrator verborum sis loquier 🗣 20:04, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
@Sgconlaw I tip my hat for your finding the senses “detailed, specific” and “playing poker in an overly cautious and reactive manner”. You must have browsed very much through endless tabs or been peculiarly dextrous in exclusion and inclusion syntax to find both and even find nine quotes, the internet being infested with “nitty-gritty” and dictionary copies; it is also notable how many of the senses appear to be of only recent currency. - Why, thank you. Actually, it wasn't too hard. I did a Google News search using the terms "nitty -gritty" (and also some other terms with minus signs in front of them to exclude the names of rappers that popped up – can't recall what they are now). — SGconlaw (talk) 16:48, 11 September 2018 (UTC)
