Latin etymology[edit]

English note is traced by M-W to Latin nota and no further. English verb note is traced by Collins to La nota, and then to notus, pp. of noscere (nosco), to gnoscere (gnosco). etymonline[1] says of nota that it "traditionally has been connected" with notus, and that this connection is deemed impossible by de Vaan. --Dan Polansky (talk) 15:43, 14 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
