Etymology[edit]

makes me wonder if "the /d/ was restored" as we say, or if it was never lost in the first place. i have JSTOR access through wikipedia but logging in seems buggy and lately i've just not bothered, but why would we assume a single attestation of the spelling without the /d/ is the dominant form?
