Etymology

@AryamanA, the etymon seems odd to me. The closest words are obviously पयस् (páyas) & पायस (pāyasa). I find it likely that the etymon for the English loanword is some intermediate, which could be Malayalam പായസം (pāyasaṁ) or Telugu పాయసం (pāyasaṁ); their forms make them good candidates.
