Calling it "naive" seems judgemental. It is a shading technique... whether or not it is naive is different depending on your perspective.

See naive sense 3: "(of art) Produced in a simple, childlike style, deliberately rejecting sophisticated techniques". That's factually true. Pillow shading ignores the true physics of how light and shadow work in a scene. Equinox 01:27, 5 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
That would make pointillism, cubism and impressionism naive, too. Yet their definitions do not describe them as naive:
