A missing proverb

There's a proverb that "a (or the) pitcher goes to the well until it breaks, or is broken at last". A Google Books search finds very many variations, but rather few occurrences of each one. I'm not sure of the exact meaning, either. Equinox ◑ 03:02, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
