possible French use in [1], perhaps a vairant of pouvait, though it might just be a typo. Really though I came here to say this looks like a caricature of the Brooklyn accent, since the coil-curl merger only took place in stressed syllables so far as I know. Yet it's the form that is used in books, possibly because the more odd a spelling looks, the easier it is to recognize. —Soap— 08:53, 12 March 2023 (UTC)
