  • Gender and Hide Production (2005, →ISBN), page 79: The Arikara gender system consisted of three linguistically marked categories. In addition to women and men, there was a third gender male category, named kUxa't or skUxa't, containing the feminine prefix "s" (see also Athearn 1967, 29; A. B. Holder 1889, 623). [] The Arikara division of labor was strongly gendered in many respects, but the periodic performance of some activities was not sufficient to reclassify a person's gender (see Roscoe 1998). For example, a woman may have hunted or participated in a war party occasionally, and remained a "normative" woman. A suite of characteristics would indicate a fourth-gender female, such as refusal to marry a man, repeated participation in hunting and warfare, cross-drssing, and sexual relationships with normative women (Roscoe 1998, 70-89).
