"leap smearing"

...is a way of dealing with a leap second, by slightly elongating nearby seconds over an extended period rather than adding the extra second all at once. Wikipedia's article says "Other schemes smear time in the vicinity of a leap second", a sense of "smear" that we seem to lack. Equinox ◑ 00:23, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
