Dhuit ungrammatical?[edit]

The title and contents of this article needs to be changed. dhuit is grammatically incorrect. — This unsigned comment was added by Síne (talkcontribs) at 13:15, 3 March 2009 (UTC).

No, it isn't. Lenited forms like "dhom", "dhuit", "dhó" are widely used in Irish, even if not recognized by the Caighdeán Oifigiúil. Angr 18:05, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm well aware that lenited versions (dhuit etc. ) are used, however they're not randomly used. They're used for grammatical reasons, "Dia dhuit" is s prime of example of this. However, the lenition of "duit" in "Tá grá agam duit" is incorrect in all dialects. "Tá gra agam duit" is the only correct version ion all dialects. — This unsigned comment was added by Síne (talkcontribs) at 11:24, 5 March 2009.

What is the grammatical reason for "Dia dhuit", and why wouldn't it apply to "Tá grá agam dhuit"? (PS Please type four tildes thus: ~~~~ after your posting to sign your name.) Angr 15:25, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The lenition in "Dia dhuit" is due to the fact that "Dia" ends in a vowel sound. That doesn't apply to "agam". You also don't lenite after the prepsition "ag" or it's prepositional pronouns.Síne 16:28, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. I just looked through the Tobar na Gaedhilge database of 45 books written in Ulster dialect. Indeed, dhuit usually appears after a vowel (especially in seo dhuit), but there are some instances of it appearing after a consonant, especially (but not only) r:
  • "'S fíor dhuit sin, a Dhonnchaidh" arsa Máirtín
  • Ar ndóighe is fíor dhuit sin.
  • Is fíor dhuit sin.
  • Nár leor dhuit dá mba giorrsach thú
  • M'anam gur fíor dhuit
  • nár léir dhuit deich slata rómhat
  • B'fhearr dhuit
  • Is fearr dhuit
  • Má's fíor dhuit a n-abhair tú ní raibh a leithéid
  • Gurba sáimh dhuit
  • do mháthair féin ag rádh leat gur chóir dhuit pósadh
  • go dtig liom díolaidheacht a thabhairt dhuit,
  • ní fhuil faic de ghar dhuit bheith ag cur an tsiubhail ort
  • ba chóir dhuit
  • ní fhuil gar dhuit
  • go mb'fheárr dhuit
  • le h-innsin dhuit.
  • le ceathramha uaire beag a chuir thart dhuit
  • dhéanfaidh an dá láimh seo suas dhuit
  • dhéanfainn gar ar bith faoi'n ghréin dhuit
  • cuir ort do hata agus steall dhuit an 'seó' sin atá ort
  • seo mo lámh dhuit
  • níl féidhm orm a innsin dhuit
No instances of "agam dhuit", but then even "agam duit" only appears once in the entire Ulster database. Angr 20:41, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

From WT:FEED (March 2009): "dhuit is wonrg, it should be duit"

As discussed above, dhuit isn't wrong, though it may be less common than duit. Angr 12:13, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
