Also porridge?

[edit]

Can this also mean porridge? 71.66.97.228 04:15, 9 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think porridge is made from oats; tóshchíín is made from cornmeal. —Stephen (Talk) 20:46, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

en:WP says "oats (rolled, crushed, or steel cut) or other cereal meals." 71.66.97.228 20:47, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

We don’t use the word porridge where I’m from, but if porridge can be made from cornmeal instead of oats, then it would be the same thing. WP says gruel is just a thinner version of porridge. —Stephen (Talk) 20:53, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure about the consistency of the Navajo term; gruel probably has a more watery consistency, while porridge is a bit thicker. 71.66.97.228 20:55, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

tóshchíín is almost a soup. You wouldn’t eat it with a fork, you have to have a spoon. —Stephen (Talk) 21:00, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK, so not porridge. Is there perhaps a version of this dish that is quite a bit thicker (like oatmeal, or polenta), but still eaten with a spoon? If so, I suppose it has its own name. 71.66.97.228 21:03, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I suppose everybody makes it to his own taste, as far as the proportions of water, salt, etc. If you let it set up for a while, it gets very thick and unappetizing, just like cream of wheat or malt-o-meal. I don’t think it would taste very good if it were too thick. —Stephen (Talk) 21:25, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply
