Possible missing sense[edit]

Chambers 1908 has this, not quite the same as our "naive" sense (and suggesting it might refer to physical shape as well): "Not licked into shape, shapeless, not smooth — from the old notion that the she-bear licks her cubs into shape, hence ungainly, awkward." Equinox 16:44, 9 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
