Alternative etymology from Chambers 1908

They derive it from variole + -ite, and define variolite as "a rock covered with pea-like pustular forms, held in India as a preventive of smallpox and worn sometimes as an amulet round the neck". Equinox 18:08, 4 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
