Named after the historic Hundred of Taunton Deane, from Old English dene (valley): "Valley by Taunton".[1]

  1. A former local government district with borough status of Somerset, England, including the town of Taunton. Merged with West Somerset district on 1 April 2019 to form Somerset West and Taunton district.
