From Middle High German tīch, from Old High German *tīh, from Proto-Germanic *dīkaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeygʷ-. Doublet of Deich, which is the same word from a West Central German source. Cognate with Dutch dijk, English ditch, Icelandic díki.
