A variant of a Lithuanian-language root, -telš- or -tilž-, related to water. Compare with Tilžė (Sovetsk, a town in Kaliningrad, Russia) and Talsai (Talsi, a city in Latvia). Related to Samogitian telkšoti (to be flooded with water, to splash) and Samogitian Telšē.
