Usage

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from John Evelyn's work Sylva, or A Discourse of Forest-Trees and the Propagation of Timber in His Majesties Dominions (1st edition, 1664; and 2nd edition, 1670). It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

• 1st edition (1664).
• 2nd edition (1670).

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

• |edition= – mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the 2nd edition (1670), specify |edition=2nd.
• |1= or |title= – mandatory in some cases: the title of the part of the work quoted from. If quoting from one of the titles indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column. If the parameter is omitted, the template defaults to Sylva by John Evelyn:

As the above titles marked with an asterisk (*) are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/sylvaordiscourse00eveluoft/page/n6/mode/1up, specify |page=6. ("Animadversion" in the 1st edition, and "Amico Charissimo Johanni Evelyno Armigero" and "Εισ Την του Πατρος Δενδρολογιαν" in the 2nd edition, are also unpaginated, but the template is able to determine the URL.)

• |chapter= and |chaptername= – if the part of work quoted from is divided into chapters, use |chapter= to specify the chapter number in uppercase Roman numerals, and |chaptername= to specify the name of the chapter. If quoting from an introduction or preface, specify |chapter=introduction or |chapter=preface.

• |2= or |page=, or |pages= – mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
  • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
  • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).

This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

• In the 2nd edition in Sylva, note the following:
  • Page numbers 45–52 are not used; the text is unaffected.
  • Page numbers 171 and 172 are repeated. Specify the second set of numbers as |page=171A and |page=172A.
• In both editions, the pagination restarts from 1 from Pomona, and again from Kalendarium Hortense.

• |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
