This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

Usage[edit]

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Edmund Spenser's work The Faerie Queene. Books I to III were first published in 1590, and then republished in 1596 together with books IV to VI. The template creates a link to online versions of these works at the Internet Archive.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

If this parameter is omitted, the template links to the 1590 edition.
  • |1= or |book= – the book number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, either |book=I, |book=II, |book=III, |book=IV, |book=V, or |book=VI.
  • |2= or |canto= – the canto number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals.
  • |stanza= or |stanzas= – the stanza number(s) quoted from in Arabic numerals. When quoting a range of stanzas, separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |stanzas=10–11.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from in Arabic numerals. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=110–111.
    • You must also use |pageref= to specify the page number that the template should link to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
You must specify this information to have the template create a link to an online version of the book.
  • |4= or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the work.
  • |brackets= – Use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
