Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from the first English translation of John Calvin's work Institutio Christianae Religionis (1536) by Thomas Norton entitled The Institution of Christian Religion (1st edition, 1561). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

(This is an imperfect copy as a number of folios are missing—see below. Replace it with a better copy if one becomes available.)

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |book=mandatory in some cases: if quoting from the main part of the work, the book number quoted from in Arabic numerals, from |book=1 to |book=4.
Book First folio number Book First folio number
1st book folio 1, verso 3rd book folio 106, verso
2nd book folio 1, recto 4th book folio 1, recto
  • |2= or |chapter= – the name of the chapter quoted from. If quoting from a chapter indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Ihon Caluin to the Reader Ihon Caluin to the Reader
Preface To the Moste Mightie and Noble Prince, Francisce the Most Christian Kyng the French Kyng His Soueraigne Lorde, John Caluine Wisheth Peace and Saluation in Christ
The Printers to the Reder The Printers to the Reder (by Reinolde [i.e., Reginald?] Wolfe and Richarde Harison)
As "Ihon Caluin to the Reader" and the preface are unfoliated, use |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/institutionofchr1561calv/page/n12/mode/1up, specify |page=12. ("The Printers to the Reder" is also unfoliated, but the template is able to determine the URL.)
  • |3= or |folio=, and |verso=mandatory in some cases: the main part of the work is numbered by folios rather than page numbers. Use |3= or |folio= to indicate the folio number, and if quoting from a verso (left-hand) page specify |verso=1 or |verso=yes; if |verso= is omitted, the template indicates that a recto (right-hand) page is quoted. If quoting a range of folios, for example, "folios 10, verso – 11, recto", note the following:
  • Use |folio= and |verso= to specify the folio at the start of the range, and |folioend= and |versoend= (if required) to specify the folio at the end of the range.
  • In addition, use |folioref= and |versoref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears). (If quoting a recto page, omit |versoend= and |versoref=.)
These parameters must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

Note the following errors in the work:

  • 1st book:
    • The following folios are missing: folios 1, recto; 26, verso; 27, recto.
  • 2nd book:
    • The foliation restarts from 1.
    • The following folios are missing: folios 102, recto and verso; 149, verso; 150, recto; 193, verso; 194, recto.
    • Folio number 67 is not used; the text is unaffected.
    • Folio number 71 is used twice; the text is unaffected. If quoting from the second occurrence, specify it as |folio=71A.
    • Folio 156 has been misprinted as 159, and folio 170 as 157; specify the correct folio number as |folio=156 and |folio=170 respectively.
  • 4th book:
    • The foliation restarts from 1.
    • The following folios are missing: folios 52 and 53; 58, verso; 59 recto and verso; 60, recto.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – a passage to be quoted from the work.
  • |footer= – a comment about the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
