1675, John Driden [i.e., John Dryden], The Rival Ladies. A Tragi-comedy. [], London: [] T[homas] N[ewcomb] for Henry Herringman, [], →OCLC, (please specify the page number), (please specify the scene number in lowercase Roman numerals):

Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from John Dryden's work The Rival Ladies (1675); the 1st edition (London: [] W. W. for Henry Her[r]ingman [], 1664; →OCLC) is not currently available online. It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from a part of the work other than the play as indicated in the second column of the following table, use this parameter to specify the name of the part as indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Epistle Dedicatory To the Right Honourable, Roger Earl of Orrery
Prologue Prologue to the Rival-Ladies
Second Prologue A Second Prologue Enters
The epistle dedicatory is not paginated, but |page= can be used to specify the "page number" that the Internet Archive has assigned to the URL of the webpage to be quoted from. Thus, if the URL is |url=https://archive.org/details/rivalladiestragi00dryd/page/n8/mode/1up, specify |page=8. This information must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work. (Although the two prologues are also unpaginated, the template can determine the webpage to link to.)
  • |act=mandatory in some cases: in most cases the template will determine the act number quoted from, as shown below. However, if page 19, 39, or 55 is quoted from, the act number must be manually specified in uppercase Roman numerals, like this: |act=I.
Act I
(pages 1–19)
Act II
(pages 19–29)
Act III
(pages 30–39)
Act IV
(page 39–55)
Act V
(pages 55–68)
  • |1= or |scene=mandatory: the scene number in lowercase Roman numerals.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page or range of pages quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
