Usage

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from George Gascoigne's work The Posies of George Gascoigne Esquire (1st edition, 1576). It can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive.

This work is a revised version of Gascoigne's work A Hundreth Sundrie Flowres Bounde up in One Small Poesie. If a title appears in that work, reference it using {{RQ:Gascoigne Flowres}} instead of this quotation template.

Parameters

The template takes the following parameters:

• |author= – the name of an author of a title other than Gascoigne.
• |1= or |part= – mandatory: the name of the part of the work quoted from. If quoting from one of the titles indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:

• In the part "Hearbes":
  • Page numbers 53–60 are not used; the text is unaffected.
  • In "Iocasta", between pages 76 and 107 the title is numbered by folios rather than page numbers: see the instructions on the use of |folio= and |verso= below. Note the following errors:
    • After folio 82, the next two folios are misnumbered as folio 81 and 82 again. Specify them using the correct folio numbers as |folio=83 and |folio=84.
    • Folio 88 is misnumbered as folio 78. Specify it using the correct folio number as |folio=88
    • After folio 92, the next two folios are misnumbered as folio 91 and 92 again. Specify them as |folio=91A and |folio=92A.
  • After page 109, the next page is unnumbered and the page after that is misnumbered as page 109 again. Specify them as |page=110 and |page=111.
  • After page 113, the next page is unnumbered. Specify it as |page=114.
• In the part "Weedes":
  • After page 231, the next page is misnumbered as page 231 again. Specify it as |page=231A.
  • Page number 236 is not used; the text is unaffected.

• |folio= and |verso= – mandatory in some cases: in "Iocasta", between pages 76 and 107 the title is numbered by folios rather than page numbers. The folio number is indicated on the top right corner of each recto (right-hand) page. Use |folio= to indicate the folio number, and if quoting from a verso (left-hand) page specify |verso=1 or |verso=yes; if |verso= is omitted, the template indicates that a recto (right-hand) page is quoted. If quoting a range of folios, for example, "folios 77, verso – 78, recto", note the following:
  • Use |folio= and |verso= to specify the folio at the start of the range, and |folioend= and |versoend= (if required) to specify the folio at the end of the range.
  • In addition, use |folioref= and |versoref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears). (If quoting a recto page, omit |versoend= and |versoref=.)

These parameters must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

• |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
• |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
• |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
