Usage

[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from Francis Quarles' work Divine Poems (1634); it is not known when the 1st edition was published. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at Google Books (archived at the Internet Archive).

Parameters

[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |chapter= – if quoting from one of the chapters indicated in the second column of the following table, give the parameter the value indicated in the first column:
Parameter value Result
Epistle Dedicatorie To the Sacred Maiestie of King Charles
Frontispiece The Minde of the Frontispice
Introduction The Introduction
Proposition The Proposition of This First Worke
To the Most High To the Most High, His Humble Servant Implores His Favorable Assistance
To the Reader To the Reader
As these chapters are unpaginated, use |1= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by Google Books to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://books.google.com/books?id=vnJnAAAAcAAJ&pg=PP17, specify |page=17.
  • |1= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory: the page number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last page number of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template determine the name of the chapter quoted from, and to link to the online version of the work.
  • |sonnet= – if a work is divided into sonnets, the sonnet number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, followed by the name of the sonnet in parentheses.
  • |subchapter= – if a work is divided into some other form of subchapter, use this parameter to specify the type of subchapter and subchapter number, followed by (if applicable) the name of the subchapter in parentheses; for example, |subchapter=sect[ion] 1 or |subchapter=A Preface to the Reader.

In the chapter "The Historie of Samson", if quoting from "To the Reader" or the untitled introductory verse, specify |subchapter=Samson Reader or |subchapter=Samson Introductory Verse. As "To the Reader" is unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned to the URL of the webpage to be linked to as described under |chapter= above.

  • |stanza= – the stanza number quoted from.
  • |2=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, "some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell") rather than an actual use of it (for example, "we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset"), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
