Template talk:drug

Not a context. Plus bad title, drug in the UK and maybe other Anglophone places always means illegal mind-altering substance, not "medication". Mglovesfun (talk) 16:26, 7 December 2009 (UTC)
- Could it be a redirect to
{{medicine}}
? --Bequw → ¢ • τ 14:04, 8 December 2009 (UTC)- Probably, it's only used an about 30 pages so we could check manually that
{{medicine}}
doesn't appear twice. Mglovesfun (talk) 15:28, 8 December 2009 (UTC)- I dispute that drug "always means illegal mind-altering substance", even in the UK in the population at large. In the US I don't think "w:Food and Drug Administration" is a misnomer. But that does not necessarily mean that
{{drug}}
should stay. Perhaps it could redirect to{{pharmacology}}
. "Medicine" seems too unspecific. Would "{{pharmaceuticals}}
" be a better context than "pharmacology"? DCDuring TALK 15:56, 8 December 2009 (UTC)- Maybe not "always" but it's my first thought when anyone says drugs, unless it's US music or TV. Mglovesfun (talk) 09:41, 9 December 2009 (UTC)
- I am rather surprised that it is your first thought, and I suppose that to be atypical for the UK. Kaixinguo 22:42, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

- From the above discussion, it should be clear that "drug" does not have a clear, specific, unambiguous meaning. since it can mean many different things, it is a poor choice for a context template name. --EncycloPetey 02:15, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
- Delete (thought I'd be bold, so to speak). Mglovesfun (talk) 20:57, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

- Keep this sense-level template and apply to all pharmaceuticals. "medicine" is not a good label for this template either.
- This is a sense-level semantic category of significant potential use in improving the quality of such definitions. Categories are not an adequate substitute for sense-level templates. DCDuring TALK 01:13, 26 January 2010 (UTC)
Delete This is not a restricted-use label. Not only pharmacologists or doctors talk about aspirin, morphine, and cough syrup. —Michael Z. 2010-03-23 23:22 z

Strong delete per Mzajac ("Many context label templates also place an entry into a relevant category, but they must not be used merely for categorization", says ELE). DCDuring's right that this "is a sense-level semantic category", but even sense-level categories are categories, and ELE applies. Note that the vast majority, if not all, of our categories for entries are sense-level.—msh210℠ (talk) 18:40, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
- Important note, on his talk page DCDuring confirmed that he wants to keep these sort of labels to allow for cleanup, that is as each entry is cleaned up the label can be removed. So now that template is orphaned we can safely delete it. Deleted. Oh and I'll let DCDuring explain in his own words, assuming he wants to. Mglovesfun (talk) 10:51, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
