Wikipedia reflist template

[edit]

So is there a counterpart to Wikipedia's reflist template? I admit that I'm a Wikipedian. Boud (talk) 23:19, 26 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Everyone here is a Wikipedian. This template is a terrible idea; should be renamed; and then replaced with the Wiki template. There are some of us who don't even know the <references/> markup, it's so comparatively useless. — LlywelynII 01:13, 28 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Usage

[edit]

@Sgconlaw usage of this template just for |group= is a misapplication. That's not what it was created for on Wiktionary, that's not what it should be used for here -- the intention of this template is to be a formatting wrapper. If you want to define references groups, you can simply do so with <references group="notes" />. @Erutuon --{{victar|talk}} 15:44, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I didn't know about that markup. Seeing your edits to this template recently reminded me of a conversation I had a while back with another editor – I'm afraid I don't remember whom and where. When I copied {{refn}} and {{reflist}} from the English Wikipedia here, that editor said that {{reflist}} was not needed here since <references /> worked just as well. I then said I would update the documentation to state that I had only intended to use {{reflist}} with {{refn}}, but I forgot to do so until now. Personally I have no problem if editors wish to use {{reflist}} with <ref> tags, but there might be some objections. — SGconlaw (talk) 15:59, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I was going to recommend deleting {{refn}}, but now that understand its functionality on wiki better, it's intention is not to be a partner to {{reflist}}, but rather to add the ability of including references inside of references, which is actually a functionally I really need. So that said, unless you need that functionality, you should be using <ref group="notes">. --{{victar|talk}} 16:14, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
If {{reflist}} is not going anywhere, what's the harm of using it with {{refn}}? That seems to be how it is used at the English Wikipedia, which is why I ported it over here (see the documentation of w:Template:Refn). — SGconlaw (talk) 16:30, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
{{refn|group=note}} is the more characters than <ref group=note> and is slower because it has to run through a template. --{{victar|talk}} 16:34, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
So ... then is there any point in keeping {{reflist}} here? What else is it useful for? — SGconlaw (talk) 17:33, 5 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Sgconlaw:, if you see the params I added, you'll see its use, which is as a formatting wrapper. --{{victar|talk}} 03:28, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Wrapper for what sort of templates? — SGconlaw (talk) 03:34, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I.e. notes. --{{victar|talk}} 04:03, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Mmmm, I see. Guess I'll have to see how it's used in practice as I can't picture it right now. — SGconlaw (talk) 06:22, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
