seeming contradiction[edit]

How is woman BOTH a synonym and antonym for GIRL? -- special:contribs/76.114.170.160 19:03, 2 January 2012‎

They share a gender and each is sometimes used synecdochically to indicate the other ("she's a precocious young woman" and "for a long time the rule of the voting booth was 'no girls allowed'"), but are on opposite sides of the adult/child line (or adult/adolescent under the Roman and related systems). What does the "Roman system" have to do with the Modern English word "girl"? Is there any evidence that the "Roman system" was ever used by a country that spoke the Modern English language? Tharthan (talk) 06:33, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
