As a proper noun, a calque of the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin Gallia Trānspadāna; the common noun is probably a regularly formed demonym from the proper noun, although it is likely that its formation was prompted by the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin Gallī Trānspadānī.
