Greetings one and all! I'm 030BeterHe, a user from the Netherlands who'll be contributing to Wiktionary in a variety of ways. I'll begin by adding Dutch toponyms, with a focus on adding the etymologies provided by Berkel and Samplonius in their 2018 reference work. I'll try to add all the toponyms of one municipality per day, although this daily goal might be hard to reach what with some new municipalities in Friesland and Groningen being enormous. Still, better to aim high than to aim low. I don't trust myself enough to add IPA transcriptions for the names, but I'll try to learn the system so that I can add them later.

21-5-2021: I have recently learned that Berkel and Samplonius also included a significant number of names of neighbourhoods and city quarters in their work on Dutch place names. I will be adding these as well under the auspices of a kind of sub-project. It is sometimes difficult to clearly establish where a neighbourhood ends and where another begins. Thus, if I cannot determine precisely what the boundaries of a neighbourhood are or if I have no information on the attestation or etymology of a name, I will not include it. This will result in some cities having far less neighbourhood entries than others (compare for example Arnhem and Doetinchem), but I'll stick to this approach to minimise any later topographic and etymological puzzling.

24-5-2021: I've foregone completing more municipalities these last few days in favour of creating an inventory of neighbourhood and borough names that have etymologies in Berkel and Samplonius. I now have a roadmap of everything that can be easily added, which will amount to about two to three and a half thousand extra lemmas with attestations and full etymologies.

31-5-2021: it has come to my attention that a non-insignificant number of hamlets that Wikipedia does not list for whatever reason. I'll cautiously add those that I can confirm still exist as independent hamlets. I'll note down the dubious cases and list them on a separate userpage for discussion once I'm done with the entire country.

10-6-2021: 1000 edits, yay

13-6-2021: and that's the first province done. I will first take a short hiatus before returning to improve the lemmas I have created for Gelderland. The improvements I'm hoping to make will be the following:

  • More consistency in etymologies;
  • Re-examining the definitions of certain elements of compound etymologies (e.g. lo, haar etc.)
  • Fixing capitalisation issues;
  • Adding terms derived from toponyms (e.g. adjectives such as Arnhems, demonyms such as Nijmegenaar etc.);
  • Adding IPA and rhymes (this will take the most time as I'm not confident in my IPA skills yet, but it's better to do it now and create a new consistent standard than to have to add IPA after the entire country has been completed);
  • Adding missing neighbourhoods (etymologiebank.nl lacks entries for some neighbourhoods; I will carefully be adding some of the missing ones) finished on 18-6-2021, I could add some more but neighbourhoods are poorly defined things and I don't want to junk up the site with false entries;
  • Fixing clunky writing;
  • Indicating former municipalities (this should be possible with the current templates, so there's no reason not to) finished on 15-6-2021;
  • Adding more crosslinks between toponyms finished on 18-6-2021;

6-7-2021: taking a short break from toponyms to learn a bit more about Wikimedia formatting and to add terms in Berbice and Skepi Creole Dutch to the entries that can take them. I'll be doing Berbice first (it's the larger of the two), then I'll switch to Skepi. Update 7-7-2021: Berbice Dutch is done (barring a few words and expressions that are unclear or annoying to add).

7-7-2021: new project: adding all terms in Skepi Dutch to their parent words. Shouldn't take too long. Update 7-7-2021: and done, might do Petjoh or Javindo tomorrow if that's possible. Turns out it is, so that's another two daughter languages and then I'll go back to toponyms.

8-7-2021: Javindo is done, also added new Skepi descendants and variants culled from a 2020 paper.

9-7-2021: Petjo is done, I'll go on another hiatus before beginning work on Negerhollands (might as well knock out all descendants in one streak).

26-9-2021: back in the toponymic saddle.

15-10-2021: and that's Limburg done, quite a ride this one. I'll be on hiatus before tackling the beast that is Noord-Brabant.

7-11-2021: North Brabant is done, my sanity is gone, what's the price of a municipality?

19-11-2021: finished Zeeland in record speed, mainly because nobody lives there. I'm planning on coming back later once the entire country is finished and adding all toponyms in Zealandic.

22-11-2021: did Flevoland in just a few hours, mainly because nobody wants to live there.

6-12-2021: Overijssel is done, weird province, didn't expect that there would be so many unexplainable toponyms in it. I've also done its neighbourhoods to a far higher standard, so before I proceed the provinces I have already completed will need to be raised to the same standard.

11-12-2021: all provinces up to the current standard, onwards to Drenthe.

15-12-2021: and that's Drenthe done, joyous province to work on. I'll probably go on hiatus again. Next things on the agenda are updating my userpage and Groningen, which is going to take quite a while to finish.

26-12-2021: and that's Groot Loug done! Just four provinces left. Friesland is going to be a major hassle, so it'll take some time.

12-1-2021: and that's Friesland done, quite a ride.

23-1-2022: and that's Zuid-Holland done, surprisingly big province going by total toponyms.

31-1-2022: and that's Noord-Holland done, a surprisingly empty province. Next will be a set of corrections and additions before this project is capped off with Utrecht.

15-2-2022: and that's Utrecht done and with that, the entire country is finished. Improvements and expansions can always be made of course, but Wiktionary has a usable toponymic dictionary of the Netherlands now.
