Manndeckung & mandekking

[edit]

I have added the oldest attestation that I could find (a rather inelegant one) to mandekking; it is from 1949. It has the 'neologistic hyphen' but I strongly doubt that it is the oldest use. Anyway I agree that they are likely quite directly etymologically related, with a calque from German into Dutch being the most probable scenario. Do you have the time and resources to track down old German attestations? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 19:00, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Lingo Bingo Dingo: I wonder who'd have the resources to track them, to be honest. The DWDS-Kernkorpus is too small; it has "Manndecker" and "Manndeckung" only 3 times altogether. The Deutsches Referenzkorpus is gigantic (20,000 or so hits), but everything before the 1990s is scarce (earliest hit 1961). In fact, I end up using Google Books most of the time. The earliest I came up with is 1950. So that doesn't help us. Of course, my assumption that the path was German > Dutch was only based on general probability; it is the other way round sometimes and it could be so here. I guess that's all I have :-) 92.218.236.219 20:06, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I suppose that there isn't an equivalent of delpher.nl for German newspapers? This Swiss site has what appears to be an attestation in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung from 1949. It is not earlier than the Dutch quote, but it is getting awfully close. I think that I am prepared to 'call' this one as a German-to-Dutch calque. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 20:23, 17 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
