If you have edited Wikipedia, you probably already know some basics, but Wiktionary does have a few conventions of its own. Please take a moment to learn our basics before jumping in.

First, all articles should be in our standard format, even if they are not yet complete. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with it. You can use one of our pre-defined article templates by typing the name of a non-existent article into the search box and hitting 'Go'. You can link Wikipedia pages, including your user page, using [[w:pagename]], {{pedia}}, or {{wikipedia}}.

Notice that article titles are case-sensitive and are not capitalized unless, like proper nouns, they are ordinarily capitalized (Poland or January). Also, take a moment to familiarize yourself with our criteria for inclusion, since Wiktionary is not an encyclopedia. Don't go looking for a Village pump – we have a Beer parlour. Note that while Wikipedia likes redirects, Wiktionary deletes most redirects (especially spelling variations), in favor of short entries. Please do not copy entries here from Wikipedia if they are in wikipedia:Category:Copy to Wiktionary; they are moved by bot, and will appear presently in the Transwiki: namespace.

A further major caveat is that a "Citation" on Wiktionary is synonymous with a "Quotation", we use these primary sources to construct dictionary definitions from evidence of the word being used. "References" (aka "Citations" on Wikipedia) are used predominantly for verifying Etymologies and usage notes, not the definitions themselves. This is partly to avoid copyright violation, and partly to ensure that we don't fall into the trap of adding "list words", or words that while often defined are never used in practice.

Note for experienced Wikipedians:

Wiktionary is run in a very different manner from Wikipedia and you will have a better experience if you do not assume the two are similar in culture. Please remember that despite your experience on Wikipedia, that experience may not always be applicable here. While you do not need to be an expert, or anything close to one, to contribute, please be as respectful of local policies and community practices as you can. Be aware that well-meaning Wikipedians have unfortunately found themselves blocked in the past for perceived disruption due to misunderstandings. To prevent a similar outcome, remember the maxim: be bold, but don't be reckless!

Having said that, we welcome Wikipedians, who have useful skills and experience to offer. The following are a couple of the most jarring differences between our projects that Wikipedians may want to learn up front, so things go smoothly for everyone. Changing policy pages on Wiktionary is very strongly discouraged. If you think something needs changing, please discuss it at the beer parlour, after which we may formally vote on the issue. You should also note that Wiktionary has very different user-space policies, we are here to build a dictionary and your user-page exists only to facilitate that. In particular we have voted to explicitly ban all userboxes with the exception of {{Babel}}; please do not create or use them.

Transtool

Hi! comments: first, copying translations can be useful, but encouraging it is not a very good idea; people often assume that word translations are symmetric and/or transitive, they are generally not, even in fairly simple cases. (Especially in "simple" cases. Obscure technical terms do often translate one-one from language A to B to C)

Someone should only be copying translations from A.wikt to B.wikt for language C if they are familiar with all 3, and preferably a native speaker of C, although this is not always practical. (Ojibwe? Ancient Greek? Classical Nuahatl? ;-)

That aside, your tool is doing more than it needs to; to move from the nl.wikt to the en.wikt, all you need is to replace: *{{ at the start of each line with *{{subst: and save it. We use the gender templates, and we have a {{trad}} template for compatibility (redirects to {{t}}). If you convert {{f}} to ''f'', someone will just have to put the template back later. Surely, people have to use every tool with care. I am surely aware of that. One only has to copy translations one knows that are correct. However, in essence the tool does not make any difference, one can always copy the translations (the danger is purely in the open view of the GFDL).

Well eh, I can't agree with your last remark. What if you want to do the reverse (namely copying from en.wikt to nl.wikt)? The template also does not convert e.g. {{f}} to ''f'', instead it converts ''f'' to {{f}} if the checkbox "change ''m'', ''f'' and ''n'' to templates" is checked.

Hi, other languages could be supported with a little help, although unicode-support is not available at the moment :(. I'm currently working on the core code of the tool to fully support ISO 639-3 (3-letter language codes). Now that WT:ELE has been updated as per WT:VOTE, can you update User:Annabelleke/Transtool to use {{trans-top}}/{{trans-mid}}/{{trans-bottom}} instead, please? --Connel MacKenzie 10:24, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

translation template

Regarding discussion about translation templates, its syntax and functionality, here's what I imagine: Two different translation templates are needed, one for basic need which will probably be used 95%+ of the times, and one with more code covering all extra functionality that would be needed for special cases, such as linking to two different norwegian wikts, the chinese wikts and customizable internal link-text etc. I have made a template for the basic need {{t2}} to work with. This should later be renamed to {{t}} . With this template I work from the idea of 1) all translations using the template, even if no link is supplied for the foreign wiktionary, 2) no matter if the link to the foreign wiktionary, same template is used, both for red and blue links, 3) an extra set of language templates as {{es}} are to be made, because the existing language templates only works with {{t}} for the TOP40 languages since they are provided in the templates naked, with no brackets. ({{t-es}} is created as example) 4) links should not be provided to entries of wiktionaries that does not yet exist (this is also a must if we don't want to create many thousands of templates, and I also don't see any reason at all to link to a wiktionary that doesn't exist). If users want, they can still adding translations as normal with [[]] only, this will be automatically changed by the bot, at later update. The syntax is "{{t2|(colour)|language code|pagename}}".

• {{t2|blue|es|hola}} equals [[hola#Spanish|hola]]^{([[es:hola|es]])} (with blue foreign language-link) and gives the result Template:t2.
• {{t2|red|es|hola}} equals [[hola#Spanish|hola]]^{([[es:hola|es]])} (with red foreign language-link) and gives the result Template:t2.
• {{t2|es|hola}} equals [[hola#Spanish|hola]] (the foreign language-link is being surpressed) and gives the result Template:t2.
