A little late but...

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! Gerard Foley 16:29, 27 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Welcome![edit]

Hi! Hope you like it here and we editors of Japanese words always appreciate the help. Trial and error is the best way to learn. Just do what you think is right and if someone disagrees you can discuss. Happy editing! Millie 23:45, 9 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

A note about Hiragana sort keys[edit]

Hi. I thought I would take a second to explain how hiragana sort keys in categories are done. In most Japanese dictionaries, だいがく, for example, would be listed amongst た words and not separated into its own だ section. However, by default this is exactly what wictionary does. To fix this, we would give だいがく the sort key of たいがく. たいがく (退学) is a word too though, so we wouldn't want だいがく to show up before it on the list. To make sure it shows up afterwards, we stick ' at the end to give it a slightly greater alphabetical order value. For words starting with ぱ or any hiragana with the little circle mark, we stick two 's at the end (''). Hope this clarifies things. :) Millie 13:17, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

No problem :) Millie 14:52, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Romaji[edit]

I had trouble with this user removing the Romaji links aswell. I asked in the beer parlor about it and if I remember corectly the comments were to keep the romaji links. Gerard Foley 18:56, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

half-width kana[edit]

accidentally entered the original with half-width kana

I have seen half-width katakana on my IME. What is it used for? Gerard Foley 19:54, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that. I have to do a presentation on Unicode soon. I wasn’t going to include anything about Japanese (nothing interesting there) but now I think I will. Gerard Foley 20:12, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

That's very cool. Thanks a lot! Gerard Foley 20:24, 15 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
