Thanks for asking. I hadn't realized that the word was still not much used outside of technical and bureaucratic contexts. It has a history that predates computing by a few decades. I hope you will join us in improving Wiktionary.

BTW, we usually use Google Books as a first source for getting usage information because the works are edited and have fewer silly errors. For grammatical aspects we use COCA. We also use Google News, especially for regional usage (current only), Google Scholar, and Google Groups/Usenet (esp., for current slang). Google Web we use mostly for showing that something doesn't exist (If an English word isn't on the Web at all, it can't be in use!) or for estimating the relative frequency of common misspellings.
