Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! - excarnateSojourner (talk | contrib) 17:43, 8 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Retiring the Rhymes namespace

[edit]

Hi. I see you recently created Rhymes:English/eɪtɪd, and just wanted to let you know that in 2021 August there was a discussion at Wiktionary:Beer parlour/2021/August#Retiring Rhymes: about replacing the Rhymes namespace (meaning all pages that start with "Rhymes:") with categories. I do not know whether anything will come of this, but my guess is that "Rhymes:" pages will eventually be deleted in favour of rhymes categories. In addition to linking to the "Rhymes:" pages, the {{rhymes}} template already automatically adds the pages it is on into these categories, and will sort by syllable count if you include the parameters documented at {{rhymes}}. - excarnateSojourner (talk | contrib) 18:01, 8 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

I found the whole process confusing. But are you saying I shouldn't have created the page? That it's going to be automatically generated somehow?
One thing I know is wrong, is that I couldn't get the breadcrumbs to show properly so I duplicated the 'nav' line: "{rhymes nav|en|eɪ|t|ɪd}". Tocharianne (talk) 11:32, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I can see how it could be confusing to newcomers. What I'm saying is that if you chose to spend time creating Rhymes pages that's fine, but your work might be undone within the next year or so, so I would suggest continuing to add {{rhymes}} to pages (since this will be useful in any case), but not creating the Rhymes pages. The Rhymes pages are not created by bot, but the category pages (eg Category:Rhymes:English/aʊ) are created by bot, so there's no need to manually create those. I don't know about the breadcrumbs and nav line, since I haven't created Rhymes pages myself.
Most of my contributions lately have been adding rhymes, and I would appreciate the help if you are still willing to contribute to that part of the project. - excarnateSojourner (talk | contrib) 15:25, 9 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I see. Add rhymes, but don't make Rhyme pages. Then use the Category at the bottom of the page to find other rhymes. Thanks for clearing that up. Tocharianne (talk) 18:41, 12 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
