Welcome

[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! --Apisite (talk) 00:56, 23 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Incorrect spelling of سۄرَخ

[edit]

This is regarding your undoing my revision of the سرخ entry. The word is pronounced differently in Kashmiri than in Urdu and is consequently written differently since Kashmiri orthography spells out all the vowel sounds. It's written as I've written it in the subject field here. Regarding your edit note, I'm well aware of how Kashmiri is written given than I'm an ethnic Kashmiri from Kashmir proper. Please familiarise yourself with rules of Kashmiri orthography if need be. You can have a look at the entry in the dictionary published by JKCA here: https://archive.org/details/dli.ernet.241982/page/n237/mode/2up?view=theater ---- Sinonquoi (talk) 06:23, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know, I figured it was some sort of vandalism which denied Kashmiri is written officially in Perso-Arabic script. Windafarna (talk) 07:51, 28 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Etymology

[edit]

Please do not eliminate registers for languages from etymology sections. We treat them at par, be it for Hindi-Urdu/Serbo-Croat et al. Further, the entries for which you removed a register are definitely supported by dict entries (khaki, nawab). We definitely do favor one register over the other be it borrowings or otherwise and that is per precedent and consensus, you are free to discuss this at Wiktionary:Beer parlour but unanimous edits cannot go. Further noting that w:WP:OR is equally applicable here on wikt, citations are needed than personal assertions. Gotitbro (talk) 10:55, 13 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
