Etymology[edit]

Partial derivation from Spanish. The element virgin refers to the island's location in the Virgin Islands. Gorda is the feminine form of Spanish gordo (fat). Coined by Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus, allegedly because the island's profile resembles a portly woman lying on her back.
