Top priorities?

Wiktionary's current coverage of Lithuanian leaves a lot to be desired, even compared to Latvian, let alone other (standardized) European languages. I have a limited amount of willpower to spend on this project, and it seems like not many other users are that interested in this language. Which of the following would be the best use of time:

• Creating entries for the most frequently used lemmas that are currently missing
• Fleshing out existing lemmas (checking and adding declension tables, etymology, usage examples, images, external sources)
• Category:Requests for translations into Lithuanian
• Wiktionary:Requested entries (Lithuanian)

Since nobody else has answered, I'm going to chime in, I don't want to leave you hanging.

Since you're creating the entries for people interested in learning Lithuanian and not for people who are already fluent, I'd say the first two points are much more useful than the latter two. Somebody who learns a language is primarily interested in basic vocabulary, whereas somebody who is interested in rarer terms is likely already somewhat fluent and can thus use monolingual Lithuanian dictionaries anyway. Hence, I'd make sure that the basic entries are good, have good grammar tables/notes (I always greatly appreciate this!) and are listed as a translation in the corresponding English article. That seems like the most useful thing for a multilingual dictionary.

I agree that the first two should be our priority and as such I have been trying to provide some further information for various entries which I notice to be lacking.

• To your first point, I think a good quality (i.e. cleaned & lemmatised) word-frequency list would help immensely in this effort. I'm still on the look-out for one with a compatible licence (to be on the safe side, since it's unclear if a list of words without definitions would constitute IP) but in the meantime the ones available from here based off data from www.opensubtitles.org are better than nothing.
• To your second point, I've been digging around a bit in the Lithuanian templates and found the documentation quite lacking - little indication of usage for many parameters; adjectives seem to be the only part of speech given much attention. Perhaps some appendices on word inflection and stress paradigms could be useful to refer to as part of illustrating template usage?

Let me know if any of these ideas would help our effort. I would be happy to make a start on documentation in the next while, as I've been getting quite interested in this topic of late. Helrasincke (talk) 11:55, 4 February 2023 (UTC)
