Luxembourgish
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Etymology tree
Inherited from Middle High German zīt, from Old High German zīt, from Proto-West Germanic *tīdi, from Proto-Germanic *tīdiz, from Proto-Indo-European *déh₂itis, from *deh₂y- + *-tis.
The plural Zäiten was adapted to the singular; the inherited form would have been *Zeiden. The prevocalic stem zeid- remains in zeideg (“ripe”), with the doublet zäiteg (“timely”) formed after the underlying noun. The third stem zeit- in Zeitung (“newspaper”) is borrowed from German (displacing obsolete Luxembourgish Zeideng).
