From the historical region of the same name, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ukrainian Запорі́жжя (Zaporížžja, place beyond the rapids), from за (za, beyond) + поро́ги (poróhy, rapids), plural of порі́г (poríh, river rapid, threshold). Compare Russian Запоро́жье (Zaporóžʹje).
