From Proto-Balto-Slavic *aśtṓ (compare Latvian astoņi), from Proto-Indo-European *oḱtṓw. Cognate to Old Church Slavonic осмь (osmĭ), Sanskrit अष्ट (aṣṭa), Latin octō.
