Etymology[edit]

Adopted and revitalized by Turkish Language Association in 1930s under the impression of a Turkic origin, later dropped and is now obsolete in usage. Ultimately from Sogdian 𐫀𐫋𐫇𐫗 (ʾjwn). Doublet of cihan.
