From Vulgar Latin *agīre, present active infinitive of *agēscō, from a change in conjugation of Latin agō (infinitive agere), from Proto-Italic *agō (“I drive; I push; I do, act”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éǵeti (“to be driving”), thematic root verb of the root *h₂eǵ- (“to drive”).
