Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *auK-(ul-), from Proto-Indo-European *Houk ‘cold, frost’. Cognate to Armenian ոյծ ‎(oyc, cold, frost)[1]. Also compare Hittite eka ‎(ice), Latvian auksts. Possible relation to Proto-Germanic *jakulaz ‎(ice, glacier) (cf. Old Norse jaki, jǫkull ‎(glacier)) is uncertain.
