From Old French allumer, alumer, from Vulgar Latin *allumināre (compare Occitan alumar, Italian alluminare, Portuguese alumiar, Spanish alumbrar), from Classical Latin illūminō, illūmināre (illuminate, light up, brighten), or from ad- + lūminō.
