Inherited from Malay Almarhum, from Classical Malay المرحوم (almarhum), مرحوم (marhum), from Arabic المَرْحُوم (al-marḥūm).[1]

Usage notes

Note that unlike English late, the usage of almarhum is not temporally bound to recency. The term is thus used as a general honorific term of reference to the deceased, irrespective of time passed since one's death.
