Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese alumẽar, from Vulgar Latin *alluminare, from Latin illūmināre, present active infinitive of illūminō, or from ad- + lūminō. Compare Galician alumar, Spanish alumbrar, French allumer, Italian alluminare.
