Etymology
From Old Galician-Portuguese amẽaça, a variant of mẽaça, from Vulgar Latin *minācia, from the plural of Latin mināx (“threatening”); cf. mināciae (“threats”). Cognate with Galician ameaza, Spanish amenaza and English menace.
