Etymology
From Latin antea, with the -i under influence of Italian anti (“before, in front of”) (from Latin ante) or from a hypothetical Vulgar Latin *anteis (from Latin ante + eis).[1], or from a Vulgar Latin *antius, as a neuter comparative of ante. Compare Old French ains, Catalan ans. See also anziano.
