Etymology[edit]

From Old High German ahsla. Cognate with Old Norse ǫxl (shoulder) (whence Danish aksel, Icelandic öxl) and ǫxull (axle) (whence Danish aksel), English axle. Either cognate with or derived from Latin axilla (shoulder joint). Cognate with Sanskrit अक्ष (ákṣa, axle).
