French

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Learned borrowing from Latin arrogāre.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /a.ʁɔ.ʒe/
  • Audio (France (Somain)):(file)

Verb

[edit]

arroger

  1. (reflexive) to arrogate, appropriate; to assume (a position, right, etc.)
    Synonym: s'adjuger

Conjugation

[edit]

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written arroge- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
