Etymology[edit]

From Middle English atspringen, ætspringen, from Old English ætspringan(to rush forth, spurt out, spring out), equivalent to at- +‎ spring. Compare Dutch ontspringen(to spring, well, outflow), German entspringen(to spring from, escape, arise).
