Etymology[edit]

From Middle English atspringen, ætspringen, from Old English ætspringan (to rush forth, spurt out, spring out), equivalent to at- +‎ spring. Compare Dutch ontspringen (to spring, well, outflow), German entspringen (to spring from, escape, arise).
