Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English atspringen, ætspringen, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old English ætspringan (to rush forth, spurt out, spring out), equivalent to at- +‎ spring. Compare Dutch ontspringen (to spring, well, outflow), German entspringen (to spring from, escape, arise).
